Before starting, I suggest you to read the complete tutorials. This will greatly lower the chances of you making a mistake.

Tools Needed:

Components for the robot

  • 2x – small 1.5 Volts motors
  • 2x – small paperclips
  • 2x – big paperclips
  • 2x – batteries AAA or AA
  • 1x – battery holder AAA or AA
  • 1x – 2 cm of heat shrink
  • 1x – wooden pearl  (for the caster)
  • 1x – meter of electric wire
  • 2x – Sub-mini lever SPDT switches
    Image
Here are the serial numbers of the components and tools from RadioShack .
Component Number
soldering iron 64-2184
electronic solder 64-006
diagonal cutter 64-2951
1.5 Volts motor 273-223
battery holder 270-398
SPDT switch 275-016
Most of the components can be bought for much cheaper at Digi-Key, Jameco, or similar.
At RobotShop you can find the dual AA battery holder and the small DC motor. You can find these components at any good electronic store.
Here is all the parts for the construction the beetle robot.
Image
1. Cut the electric wire in pieces of 6 cm each, 13 times.
Image
Strip 1 cm at each end.
Image
2. Regroup all the components.
Image

3. Solder each wire to each components except the two batteries.
Image
4. Take the battery holder and make a connection to the connection.
Image
This will give a third connection.See picture below.

The blue wire is the third connections
Image
5. Turn the battery holder up side down so the batteries point to the ground. Glue the two switches on the battery holder in a V form.

6. Glue the motor beside each switch so that the shaft touches the ground

9. Take the small paper clip and bend them to make antenna.
Image
Glue them to the switches and don’t put to much glue.
Image
Add 1 cm of heat shrink to the shaft of each motor.

How to Produce Electricity from Vegetables

How to Produce Electricity from Vegetables

You can produce electricity from vegetables and fruits as a science experiment or just for fun. Potatoes are most commonly used, but apples, lemons and other vegetables can be used too. You will create an electric cell with the vegetable. Several cells hooked together is how batteries are made. Experimenting with different vegetables will make cells of various power that you can then compare.

Difficulty:
Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Potato
  • Galvanized nail
  • Copper wire
  • Headphones
    • 1
Scrub the potato to remove any dirt. Dirt can get on the wires and prevent the current from flowing.
    • 2
Stick the nail into the potato so that 1 inch still protrudes. Stick a 3- or 4-inch long copper wire 1 inch into the potato near the nail, but don't let them touch.
    • 3
Put on the headphones. Touch the tip of the headphone jack to the nail, then touch the copper wire to the metal at the top of the jack. You should hear a small click as the current flows.
    • 4
    • Flowing electricity is formed from the liquid in the potato forming a current between the two different metals in the nail and wire. When you touch them to your headphone jack, you complete the circuit and hear the electricity click.

How to Build a Speaker for a Science Projectthumbnail
A kind of speaker
A speaker is a device that is used to project sound. Many household devices use speakers such as televisions, computers and radios. Without speakers, we would not be able to hear some of the many sounds around us. A speaker science project will teach the person making the project about sound and how to amplify it. To build a speaker for a science project, several steps will need to be followed that use items found in many households.

Difficulty:
Moderate

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Speaker wire
  • Balloon
  • Masking tape
  • Wire cutter
  • Magnet
  • Stereo
  • Wire stripper
    • 1
Blow up a large balloon and tie it. Make sure you blow the balloon up as full as you can get it without popping it.
    • 2
Separate the two wires that are moulded together on a 5-foot piece of speaker wire. By making a small slice between the two wires with a wire cutter or utility knife you can easily pull on each wire to separate it into two 5-foot pieces. Wrap the middle section of one 5 feet piece of speaker wire around your hand forming a coil, and tape it together to keep it from unravelling. Leave about 2 feet of each end of the speaker wire unwrapped.
    • 3
Strip about an inch of insulation from both ends of the speaker wire using a wire stripper.
    • 4
Insert the ends of the wire into the speaker slots on the back of the stereo. If the stereo has screw terminals, wrap one end around each screw.
    • 5
Tape the wire that is coiled together to the surface of the balloon.
    • 6
Turn the stereo on and turn the volume up. Set it to a radio station or play a music CD.
    • 7
Place a magnet about 3-inches square or round inside the coil of wire. As you place the magnet inside the coil you will faintly begin to hear sound from the stereo.
